A residence designed for a client who operates a family-owned custom metal fabrication shop in Northwest Arkansas. He and his wife wanted to build a home for themselves primarily for entertaining, with a special emphasis placed on the perception and flow of public spaces. The living room is large and open, with several smaller areas on the periphery to encourage and accommodate more intimate interaction and respite from the larger group when entertaining. With few exceptions, the materials used in the home are monochromatic and have a strong industrial feel. Concrete, steel and glass dominate the palette and reflect the intertwining of the owner’s profession and tastes. Clean lines, hard surfaces, cool materials and transparency are all used with the intention of making those who experience the spaces more aware of their surroundings and question their perceptions of place and comfort.
